Accessibility at Middlesbrough Mela

Middlesbrough Mela is committed to being an inclusive, welcoming festival for everyone. We recognise that people experience barriers in different ways, and we work to remove these barriers wherever possible. Our approach is guided by the Social Model of Disability, which means we focus on identifying and reducing the obstacles created by the environment, communication, and event design.

We know that not all disabilities are visible. Many people live with conditions that affect mobility, energy, sensory processing, communication, mental health, or medical needs. This statement outlines the support we provide and the adjustments we are working towards.

What we provide

  • Stepfree access across most of the site
  • Accessible toilets and nearby rest points
  • A Quiet Space for anyone needing a lowsensory break
  • Assistance for people who cannot stand for long or who experience anxiety, pain, or fatigue
  • Clear signage, simple wayfinding, and trained staff who can offer calm, supportive assistance
  • Advance Access Guide can be downloaded by clicking here

Visitors are welcome to bring mobility aids, medical equipment, picnic blankets, seating and sensory supports such as ear defenders, sunglasses or fidgets.

Our Commitment

Middlesbrough Mela is for everyone. We will continue working with disabled people, community groups, and access specialists to ensure the festival is inclusive, safe, and enjoyable for all.
